Bringing a new puppy or dog into your home means making a few changes to ensure their safety and comfort. Here are some simple tips to dog-proof your home:
1.Secure Hazardous Items
Keep chemicals, medications, and cleaners out of reach in locked cabinets.
Remove toxic plants and make sure food (especially chocolate, grapes, etc.) is safely stored.
2. Protect Furniture and Décor
Hide electrical cords or use protective covers to prevent chewing.
Secure heavy furniture to avoid accidents if your dog knocks things over.
3. Create a Safe Space
Designate a safe area with a bed and water bowl where your dog can relax.
Use baby gates or a crate to restrict access to areas you want to keep off-limits.
4. Manage Eating Habits
Store pet food and treats securely.
Avoid choking hazards by keeping small items out of reach.
5. Remove Tripping Hazards
Secure rugs or use non-slip mats to avoid slips.
Clear pathways to prevent accidents.
6. Outdoor Safety
Check your fence for gaps or areas your dog could escape from.
Remove sharp objects and ensure there’s shade and water outside.
7. Keep Small Objects Out of Reach
Pick up small items like laundry sheets, socks, or toys that your dog could chew or swallow.
8. Emergency Preparedness
Know your emergency vet contacts/locations and keep a pet first aid kit handy.
