Objective:
Teach your dog to come when called.
Method:
Starting inside, get your dogs attention by holding a high value treat in front of them.
Stand a few feet away from your dog and call their name followed by “Come!” in a cheerful, enthusiastic tone to capture their attention.
Once your dog begins to come toward you, take a few steps backwards while showing excitement. Once they get to you mark and reward.
If you are using a leash to help your dog learn this trick, gently pull the leash if needed to guide them closer.
Consistently practice this in different locations, gradually increasing the distance from which you call them, reinforcing the behavior each time they respond correctly.
Once you are confident in your dog and they are consistently listening to your recall, move outside with a long leash to ensure your dog is safe in case they get distracted.
Ensure you create positive associations by always rewarding them when they come, making it a fun and rewarding experience for them.
Tips & Troubleshooting:
If they don’t come: Use a more exciting tone or run backward to entice them.
If they get distracted: Practice in a quiet area first, gradually introducing distractions.
If your dog doesn’t come right away outside, give your dog a quick tug (correction) on the leash. Once they start coming your direction, show excitement and mark and reward.
