Objective:

  • Teach your dog to give their paw on command.

Method:

  • Start by sitting in front of your dog in a comfortable, distraction-free space. Hold a treat in one hand, making sure your dog can see it.

  • Encourage them to lift their paw to get the treat by presenting the treat slightly above their nose and to one side. This motion often prompts them to lift their paw in an attempt to reach the treat.

  • Once they lift their paw, immediately say “Paw” in an enthusiastic tone. At the same time, mark the behavior with a click or a verbal cue like “Yes!” and reward them with the treat.

  • If your dog doesn’t initially lift their paw, try gently tapping their leg just above the paw or using a favorite toy or another enticing treat to prompt them.

  • After several successful attempts, gradually phase out the treat lure by offering praise instead, encouraging them to lift their paw solely in response to the verbal command.

  • You can also introduce a hand signal, such as a gentle upward motion with your hand, to reinforce the command visually. Practice this in short sessions to keep your dog engaged and focused.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • If they don’t lift their paw: Try gently tapping their leg or use a toy they enjoy.

  • If they offer their other paw: Acknowledge it, but guide them back to the paw you want to train.
