Objective:
Teach your dog to go to a designated spot.
Method:
Use a mat or bed that is comfortable and appealing to your dog, placing it in a quiet area free from distractions.
Lead your dog to the mat by showing them a treat and encouraging them to follow you. Use a gentle motion to guide them toward the mat, maintaining a positive and enthusiastic tone.
Once your dog steps onto the mat, clearly say the command “Place” in a cheerful voice to create a positive association with the command.
Mark the behavior immediately using a clicker or a verbal cue like “Yes!” the moment your dog is on the mat. This helps them understand exactly what behavior is being rewarded.
Reward them immediately with the treat while they remain on the mat, and offer praise and petting to further encourage them.
Gradually increase the duration they need to stay on the mat before receiving the treat. Start by rewarding them after just a few seconds and slowly build up to longer stays as they improve.
Incorporate short training sessions multiple times a day to reinforce the behavior, ensuring the sessions remain positive and fun.
Tips & Troubleshooting:
If they don’t go to the mat: Start by leading them there and marking and rewarding once they are on it.
If they leave the mat: Use a leash initially to prevent them from wandering off.
