Objective:

  • Teach your dog to jump onto your shoulders from behind and look at the camera for a selfie.

Method:

  • Start by having your dog in a sitting position behind you. Use a treat to get their attention and create a positive association with the activity.

  • Use a command like “Selfie” as you encourage them to jump up. You can practice this by gently guiding them with your hands, giving them a clear idea of where you want them to go.

  • As they jump onto your shoulders, mark the behavior with a click or “Yes!” and reward them immediately with a treat and praise when they are settled and looking at you.

  • Once they are comfortable jumping onto your shoulders, introduce a camera or phone. Hold it up in front of you, and encourage them to look at it. Use a treat to lure their gaze toward the camera.

  • Practice this in short sessions, gradually increasing the time they stay in the selfie position. Reward them each time they successfully jump up and look at the camera.

  • Capture the moment with a photo when they’re in the right position.

  • Give them a treat once you take the photo, reinforcing the idea that this is a fun and rewarding activity.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • If they hesitate to jump, start by practicing with them jumping onto a low surface, like a bench or your lap, to build their confidence.

  • If they don’t look at the camera, use a high-value treat to lure their attention, or make a fun noise to get them to focus on you.

  • Always ensure safety when they’re jumping on your shoulders. Practice in a controlled environment and be mindful of their size and your comfort.

  • If they get too excited, keep training sessions short and calm, gradually building up their excitement level.

  • Celebrate every successful attempt, even if it’s not perfect. Positive reinforcement is key to making this a fun and engaging activity for both of you!
