Objective:

  • Teach your dog to sit on command.

Method:

  • Start with your dog standing in front of you, ensuring they are focused on you and the treat.

  • Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose to capture their attention.

  • Slowly move the treat upward and slightly back over their head. This motion encourages their head to follow the treat, which naturally causes their bottom to lower as they shift their weight.

  • As soon as their bottom touches the ground, immediately say “Sit” in a clear, cheerful voice, then mark the behavior (with a click or “Yes!”) and reward them with the treat.

  • Repeat this process several times, gradually phasing out the treat lure and relying more on the verbal command and praise.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • If they jump for the treat: Keep the treat close to your body to prevent jumping.

  • If they don’t sit: Use a gentle push on their hindquarters while guiding them with the treat.
