Objective:
Teach your dog to ignore distractions such as food being dropped on the floor
Method:
Show your dog a treat and close your hand around it. Say “Leave it.”
Wait for them to stop trying to get the treat; when they do, mark the behavior and reward them with a different treat.
Gradually increase the challenge by placing the treat on the floor, repeating the command “Leave it” and marking when they resist the urge to grab it.
Reinforce the behavior by rewarding them with treats or praise when they successfully ignore distractions in different environments.
Practice with various distractions, such as toys or noises, to help them generalize the command.
Use a long leash during outdoor practice to maintain control and prevent them from getting the treat if they attempt to grab it.
Consistently practice this command in different locations, like at home, in the park, or around other pets, to build their confidence and understanding.
Tips & Troubleshooting:
My first and most important suggestion would be to use a high value treat as the reward, and a low value treat used as the “bait” that is dropped to the floor.
This allows your dog a better chance at resisting the food that is dropped on the floor.
If they don’t understand, start with less tempting items and gradually increase the challenge.
If they are overly excited, practice in a quiet environment, gradually introducing distractions.
