Objective:

  • Teach your dog to walk beside you without pulling.

Method:

  • Use treats to keep your dog focused on you. Start walking and say “Heel” when they are beside you, marking and rewarding them.

  • Keep the treat close to your body to encourage them to stay in position.

  • If they start to pull, stop walking and wait for them to return to your side before continuing.

  • Gradually increase the distance you walk while maintaining their focus, rewarding them for staying in the correct position.

  • Practice turns, stops, and changes in pace to reinforce their ability to stay with you.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • If they pull ahead, stop walking until they return to your side. Start walking again once you have their full attention.

  • If they are distracted, practice in a quiet area with fewer distractions initially.
