Objective:

  • Teach your dog to move backward on command.

Method:

  • Stand in front of your dog and use a treat to guide them backward. Say “Back Up” or “Beep Beep” as you move the treat away from them.

  • Mark the behavior as they take steps back, rewarding them immediately for each successful step.

  • Gradually increase the distance they need to back up before rewarding them.

  • Practice this in different locations and contexts to reinforce the behavior.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • If they hesitate, take a step closer and encourage them to move back away from you.

  • If they are turning around rather than backing up, my suggestion would be to try in a closed corners so that they aren’t able to turn around.
