Key Points

  1. Use Their Regular Meals:

    • Replace some or all of your dog’s mealtime with training sessions.

    • Take their kibble portion for the day and use it as rewards during training to avoid overfeeding.

  2. Split the Meal:

    • Serve half their kibble in a bowl as usual.

    • Use the other half during training sessions for rewards.

  3. Supplement with High-Value Treats:

    • Save high-value treats (like small pieces of chicken, cheese, or commercial training treats) for difficult commands or distractions.

    • Use these sparingly to keep your dog engaged without spoiling their appetite.

  4. Keep Portions Small:

    • Use tiny pieces, especially during long training sessions, to prevent overfeeding while keeping your dog motivated.

Tips for Success

  • Always check labels for dog-safe treats and avoid harmful ingredients like xylitol or high salt content.

  • If your dog loses interest in kibble, rotate high-value treats sparingly to keep them engaged.

  • Monitor your dog’s weight and adjust portion sizes as needed to maintain a healthy balance.
