Mark and Reward

Objective:

Reinforce desired behaviors through marking and rewarding.
This step is the foundation to every trick/training

Method:

Use a distinct sound or word (like “Yes!” or a clicker) to mark the behavior immediately when it occurs.
As soon as you mark, reward your dog with a treat and praise.

Tips & Troubleshooting:

If your dog seems confused: Ensure your mark is immediate and clear, so they understand what behavior is being rewarded.
If they don’t respond to the mark: Experiment with different treats or rewards to find what motivates them best.
One of the most important pieces to developing a strong connection on this foundation you are building is using excess praise. As important it is to give your dog a high value treat, the praise you also give your dog when they succeed goes a long way as you get to the more complicated trainings.
